Forklift tyre pricing is one of those things everyone wants a straight number for, and one of those things that genuinely doesn’t have one. What you pay depends on tyre type, size, brand, and a few factors specific to the South African market that don’t show up in overseas pricing guides. Here’s what actually moves the number.
What drives the price
- Tyre type: solid tyres generally cost more upfront than pneumatic or polyurethane equivalents of the same size, but last longer per rand spent in most applications.
- Size and load rating: larger forklifts with higher capacity ratings need larger, more heavily reinforced tyres, which cost more to manufacture.
- Brand and compound: premium compounds, including non-marking rubber, sit above standard black rubber pricing.
- Import duties and exchange rate: most forklift tyre compounds are imported or use imported raw rubber, so rand weakness feeds fairly directly into pricing.
- Fitting method: mobile on-site fitment costs more than bringing the forklift to a workshop, but saves the downtime and transport of getting it there.
Rough price bands, so you’re not going in blind

- Polyurethane press-on tyres for standard electric forklifts: typically the most affordable option per tyre, reflecting their lighter construction.
- Solid resilient tyres for mid-range counterbalance forklifts: a noticeably higher unit cost, offset by the longest service life of the three main types.
- Pneumatic tyres for outdoor and heavy-duty applications: pricing varies widely by tread pattern and load rating, with premium deep-tread options costing meaningfully more than standard patterns.
The false economy of the cheapest quote
We’ve watched this play out more than once: a client fits budget tyres and ends up replacing them every three or four months because the compound simply can’t handle the surface or load. Switch to a premium solid tyre suited to the actual application, and that same replacement cycle can stretch out to eighteen months or more. Run the maths over a year and the “cheaper” tyre often costs two or three times more once you add up the repeat fitments and the downtime each one causes. Fitting and labour
Fitting is rarely the biggest line item, but it’s not free either, and it varies depending on whether you bring the forklift to us or need a mobile fitment on-site. If your fleet is large enough to justify it, wholesale pricing on tyres and parts together often works out considerably cheaper than ordering piecemeal as tyres wear out one at a time.

Not automatically. Always confirm whether a quote covers the tyre only or the tyre plus fitment, since the difference can be significant, especially for mobile on-site work.
Do forklift tyre prices differ between provinces?
Delivery cost can shift the final number for more remote areas, but base tyre pricing is generally consistent nationally since compounds and sizes come from the same supply chains regardless of destination.
Is it cheaper to replace all four tyres at once?
Often, yes, particularly if you’re already paying for a mobile fitment call-out or workshop booking. Replacing tyres in pairs or as a full set also avoids the mismatched-height handling issues that come from mixing old and new tyres on the same axle.
